Golf Courses
5 Rounds Golf at Castlemartyr , Fota Island, Old head, Bantry Bay, Killarney GC
Castlemartyr
Set in an old manor estate in East Cork, The Castlemartyr Golf Resort is an 18 hole, 6,728 yd, Par 72, inland links style course. It is the creation of renowned golf course designer Ron Kirby, whose credentials were honed on such Irish masterpieces as Dromoland Castle, the Old Head, and Mount Juliet, as well as Gleneagles in Scotland.
In Castlemartyr Mr. Kirby has developed an inland links style course that creates a visually pleasing yet testing experience. The course is designed to be challenging and pleasurable for players of any calibre. Castlemartyr Golf Club provides first class service across all aspects of the golf spectrum, from the course, to the Clubhouse and Pro Shop.
Fota Island Golf Club
THE PREMIER GOLF RESORT IN IRELAND
No matter how you choose to spend your time at Fota Island Resort, it won’t go unnoticed that every last detail has been carefully considered. For golf enthusiasts, Fota Island Resort is a player’s paradise. Surrounded by tall oak trees, and bathed in peace and quiet, Fota Island Resort provides the perfect backdrop for the perfect game.
Originally designed in 1993 by Irish Ryder Cup star Christy O’Connor Jr. and twice English Amateur Champion Peter McEvoy, before being redesigned in 2000 by golf architect Jeff Howes, it comes as no surprise that Fota Island Resort has been a three-time host to the Irish Open with all three courses (Deerpark, Belvelly and Barryscourt) maintained to the very highest standard all year around. Just a few minutes walk from the popular clubhouse you will find one of Ireland’s most sophisticated and modern golf facilities, Fota Island Golf Academy. Focused on ensuring golfers of all ages and abilities have the support they need, step inside and you’ll find a dedicated personal trainer and fully equipped strength and conditioning gym, daily tuition enhanced by Trackman high-tech video systems and superior coaching from talented PGA professionals. Coaching is also available on the course and in the newly renovated outdoor practice bays.
Old Head Golf Links
Old Head Golf Links is built on a 220-acre diamond of land jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. The links and practice area occupy 180 acres and the remaining 40 acres of unspoilt cliff frame the course. It is a piece of golf real estate like no other, that causes many a golfer and visitor to pinch themselves as they drive through the ancient gateway with the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean some 300 feet below.
The sensory overload does not stop there with the journey along the fragrant Hydrangea and Rosa Rugosa lining the Old Head driveway providing stunning vistas across the superbly manicured golf course, with the powerful ocean on both sides and beyond the famous lighthouse that lies in front.
Old Head, par 72, comprises five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s - stretches from the ladies' tees at 5,413 yards to over 7,100 yards from the tips, with a minimum of six tees per hole making it suitable for golfers of all handicap abilities. Nine holes play along the cliff tops with all eighteen holes providing unsurpassed ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern but fair test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.
The course is set up on a daily basis depending on the prevailing weather conditions. Facilities include a warm up range, a putting green and a short game practice area. From the incredible Clubhouse, Old Head has a team of exceptional and friendly service staff to cater for the golfers and residents every need.
Bantry Bay
Bantry Bay Golf Club's 18-hole, championship, cliff top, parkland course, towers above the head of Bantry Bay in the far west of County Cork. Fourteen holes immediately overlook the shore where the warm Gulf Stream first touches land on this side of the Atlantic. There are splendid panoramic views across the sea and islands to the Beara Mountains, Sheeps Head and Mizen Head peninsulas.
The course follows the natural contours of the countryside that results in some breathtaking holes in the picturesquely undulating scenery, even the six lakes and other hazards would charm a landscape artist.
Killarney Golf Club
Killarney Golf & Fishing Club located adjacent to Lough Lein with the McGillycuddy Reeks in the background. All three courses are built to modern specifications with sand-based greens and tree-lined, undulating fairways. Killeen is considered the flagship course of the club. It reopened in June 2006 and is slightly longer with faster greens, which have been brought closer to the water hazards around the course. Long accurate shots will be rewarded on this course. While Mahony’s Point is the most scenic and friendly of our 3 courses, it is enjoyable and challenging to golfers of all standards.
The combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards ensure that there is enough danger to spoil a good round. Lackabane is the newest of our three courses and opened for play in 2000. Lakes and streams are featured throughout the length and breadth of the course, adding to the beauty and danger in equal measure. This course is best suited to mid- to low-handicap golfers and is an excellent test of the long game.
